Asbestos garage and shed removal, Sydney
Old fibro garages and Super Six shed roofs are among the most common jobs we see.
Do old garages and sheds contain asbestos?
Often. asbestos.nsw.gov.au lists garages, sheds and dog kennels as common places for asbestos cement sheeting and corrugated 'Super Six' roofing (asbestos.nsw.gov.au). Sheet that is white to grey, hard and brittle, sometimes with a dimpled surface on one side, may be asbestos cement (source).
Do I need a licensed removalist for a shed?
A typical single garage has well over 10 m² of wall and roof sheeting. More than 10 m² of non-friable asbestos must be removed by a Class B (or Class A) licensed removalist, and the removalist must notify SafeWork NSW 5 calendar days before starting (SafeWork NSW).
Can the removalist also demolish the slab and frame?
Many licensed removalists also hold a demolition licence and quote the whole job, including the frame and footings. Ask for asbestos removal, demolition and disposal as separate lines so you can compare quotes.
Where does the asbestos go?
Asbestos waste must go to a facility licensed to accept it. The NSW EPA lists facilities that accept household asbestos (NSW EPA). Ask your removalist for the disposal receipt.
