Broken asbestos roofing after a storm: don't sweep it up, wet it down or walk on it.

What should I do first?

Keep people and pets away from broken pieces. Don't sweep, hose with high pressure, or walk on the roof; fibro roofs are fragile and a fall risk. Cover openings with tarps only if you can do it from a safe position without breaking more sheeting.

Who can clean up the debris?

Broken asbestos sheeting should be cleaned up by a licensed removalist. If more than 10 m² is affected, or the material is friable, it must be.

Will insurance cover it?

Many home insurance policies cover storm damage, including making the area safe. Call your insurer, take photos, and keep the removalist's quote, clearance and disposal receipt.
