How do I know if my fence is asbestos?

asbestos.nsw.gov.au lists fences as a common use of asbestos cement sheeting (asbestos.nsw.gov.au). Flat or corrugated grey cement panels on a pre-1990 property should be treated as asbestos until a sample is tested. See testing cost.

Is a cracked fibro fence dangerous?

Weathered, cracked or broken sheets can release fibres when disturbed. Don't pressure-wash, sand, drill or break panels. Leave damaged pieces in place and keep kids and pets away until a licensed removalist looks at it.

Who pays for a shared asbestos fence?

Dividing fence costs between neighbours are covered by the Dividing Fences Act 1991 (NSW). Talk to your neighbour first; a removalist can quote one job covering both sides.

Do I need a licence to remove a fence?

A long fence run is usually more than 10 m² of sheeting, so it needs a licensed removalist. Under 10 m² a homeowner can legally do it but must follow SafeWork's Code of Practice, and NSW strongly recommends a licensed removalist (SafeWork NSW).

DisclosureSydney Asbestos Quotes is a free referral service. We are not an asbestos removalist and we do not hold an asbestos removal licence. We pass your request to independent removalists who say they hold a current SafeWork NSW licence, and you should always check a removalist's licence yourself before you engage them. Nothing on this site is safety or legal advice; see SafeWork NSW.
